There were several generations of Xbox console. Each generation has its own technical specifications. Some summary of the history of each Xbox console and their features.
Xbox Originally released late 2001 by Microsoft, the Xbox was part of the sixth generation of gaming consoles, which also included the Xbox’s main competition: Sony’s PlayStation 2. It was the first console to feature a built-in hard drive as well as introducing Xbox Live which was a fee-based online service that allowed multiplayer gaming through a broadband connection as well as downloading of additional games and content.
Xbox 360 The Xbox 360 was released late 2005 as part of the sixth generation of game consoles. It was a great improvement over the previous Xbox console which included an improved Xbox Live. There were several retail configurations released over the lifespan of the Xbox 360. They consisted of various storage capacity and some subtle changes and improvements to the consoles hardware, starting with the Core and Premium models and followed in 2007 with the Elite and Arcade models, replacing the Premium and Core models respectively. A larger storage capacity version of the Elite model dubbed the Super Elite was subsequently released in 2009. In 2010 the Slimmer model known as Xbox 360 S was released, replacing the Elite and Super Elite configurations. Finally, the Xbox 360 E model was released in 2013 and took on the aesthetic of the newly released Xbox One.
Xbox One The Xbox One was released in 2014 by Microsoft, competing with the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii U. The Xbox One supports 4K output and additional cloud support with Xbox Live. Live streaming via Twitch is also incorporated. In 2015, Microsoft released the Xbox Game Preview Program, which allows developers to release unfinished games for Xbox users to test in beta and pre-order. A revised model called the Xbox One S was released 2016. With a streamlined design and native support for 4K video playback and up-scaling. It was praised for its smaller size, graphical improvements, and its lack of an external power supply.
